WHY DON'T YOU REVIEW...?
Every now and again various readers of this site (although usually newcomers) email me asking if and when I'm going to review so-and-so. Obviously, given I was Mr. Considerate 2002, I take the time to respond to their query but it struck me that it would be best if everyone could see my stance on this or that band so I don't have repeat requests from different people inquiring about the exact same artist. Originally I composed a rough list of the order of which I planned to concentrate on certain artists but I binned that idea when it realised it would take the fun away from my Overall Ratings Page which serves as a continual document of my expanding CD collection. So, instead, you now have the chance to email me what band you would like me to review (preferably using the Tripod feedback gear below) and I'll respond on this page with my answer. Given that my response will likely change over time (as I buy more albums) I will date my reply thereby allowing room for updates when I feel my position has changed. If you don't want to include your email address make sure you include your name or alias in the body of the text otherwise it will come through to me as blank. That said, I will respond to anonymous requests but it would be real swell if I had some definite name to attach to the email. Obviously the other thing you need to do is make sure the name of the artist you are wondering about is either in the subject line or body of the text. Finally, it is in my interest and yours if you check that I haven't reviewed the artist already. No one wants to look an idiot.
Why don't you review...?

Jack, you really should look into Yo La Tengo. Painful is a good start, but almost all of their 90s works are spectacular. Also, it'd be nice to hear your thoughts on Mission Of Burma (Trail Of Dead influence), Sonic Youth, Fugazi and of course Kiss. Ah well, the last one was just a little joke...

I would recommend you check out the band Opeth, they are much more than a typical 'death metal' band- they mix heavy sections with beautiful acoustics and heartfelt clean vocals, and have a very impressive back catelogue. I'd reccomend the album Damnation which is a 60's/70's psychadelia/prog affair which is entirlely soft, or Still Life, one of their best heavy albums.
11.05.06 - Sorry but it ain't gonna happen - JF

Afghan Whigs Gentlemen and The Exploding Hearts.
I think Gentlemen might be an album you'd really enjoy. I rank it as
the best album released during the musical black hole known as the 90s
- and our tastes in many artists overlap quite a bit (Dylan, Thunders,
Replacements, Only Ones, Modern Lovers, etc.). Also Guitar Romantic
by the Exploding Hearts - the great forgotten album of this decade, the
only American album of the 2000s worthy of being mentioned in the same
breath as Is This It.

C'mon, I was sure being British and all, and having a very good taste
in music you would be aquainted with My Bloody Valentine. Loveless is
most definatley the 2nd best album of the 90s. Maybe Nevermind, or
Odelay, or 69 Love Songs, or Soft Bulletin, In
The Aeroplane Over the Sea. Also, why haven't you reviwed any of those albums yet.
Anyway, Loveless and their first album Isn't Anything are both to be
looked into, and i'm interested in your opinions.
You should also look into Wilco, Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
very good. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot might be the 2nd greatest album of the
00's second to Kid A. Summerteeth is good, more like genius in embryo
like The Bends and On Avery Island and Mellow Gold and
Isn't Anything and Slanted and Enchanted. That brings me to something
else, if you're a Pavement you should check of the Silver Jews, David Bermanm, the front
man in Silver Jews went to College with Stephen Malkmus. So Have a good
time. O, review some Sonic Youth too. Please
26.01.06 - I am going to review Loveless soon and I'm looking into 90s indie I missed first time around so some of those albums you mentioned should also be reviewed at some stage - JF

Jack, I've read your site and find it very enjoyable. It's nice that
your opinions are your own, and not regurgitations of the mainstream
music press (eg. as typified by Mojo or Q) or influenced by sales.
One band I haven't seen mentioned, which I think you might like, is
Guided by Voices. The lo-fi Bee Thousand is a good and usual place to
start, but can be expensive in the shops. Alien Lanes (the follow up) is
longer, cheaper and just as good. Of their major label, big production,
releases, Isolation Drills is perhaps the best. Also consider their
'best of', which is called Human Amusement at Hourly Rates.

I hate to pry because you have a great site and already feature a good number of my favorite artists...but I do think that women are given the shaft. I'd like to see Janis Joplin (c'mon, its only 3 albums!), Joni Mitchell (truly the best female artist of the 20th century) or Sleater-Kinney (an awesome, awesome band that is severly underrepresented in the WRC). Anyways, great site! :-)

I know you said no to Silverchair, but you've probably only heard old Silverchair- Daniel Johns has matured (he's now all of 24). Van Dyke Parks called him one of the greatest dongwriters of his generation, and Diorama is easily a 9* album.

Great site. Have you heard of a band called R.E.M.? Am I wrong to
believe they have one of the best and most varied catalogues in the history of
rock.
How about Gordon Lightfoot and Tim Buckley, have you heard his
Starsailor album?
Why do you think it is that Al Stewart and Roy Harper are ignored by
the critics and yourself, but Nick Drake is renowned.

hi Jack, you know of course, but still: Tom Waits. Leonard Cohen? Also: Little Steven's Men without Women I'd say.

I know that your previous comments on the WDYR page have revealed an intense dislike of U2.. and that's precisely why I'm begging you to review them. I can't stand U2, and the more strongly negative things written about them the better. Still, if you don't want to put yourself through it, I'll understand. Great site.
22.05.05 - I take your point but, firstly, I would have to buy their albums and then I would have to listen to them; neither of which I am desperately inclined to do. I would rather devote my time to reviewing bands I believe deserve more coverage, not less - JF

I'm having to look through my record collection to see what hasn't been
mentioned yet.
All I can suggest are Mott the Hoople, John Lennon, the Zombies, and
maybe some Zappa... which you've already said no to, but I'm slightly
offended the other dude described him as whacky. It's like calling
Beefheart sloppy. It only looks that way unless you're actually paying
attention. But anyway...
oh, and uhm, *cough* Billy Joel? *knows that most critics avoid him

First off I'd like to say I really love your site; it's probably my favorite review site out there. Secondly, any chance you'd ever review Neutral Milk Hotel? They only released two albums proper and their second album, In the Areoplane Over the Sea, is considered by many to be the greatest album of the 90s. Surrealistic marching band folk rock. Ok, I'm wondering when your gonna review some more Miles Davis. You

Ronnie Dio's solo career (or at least the heavenly Holy Diver), and
Echoes by The Rapture (since you reviewed Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes,

reviewing either Patti Smith or Tracy Chapman?
Thanks, and sorry for the bucketload of requests.
20.06.04 - I am going to re-write my Sabbath page soon but I doubt I will expand it. Nothing doing on Dio, The Rapture haven't impressed me, more Patti Smith is a possibility (I've already reviewed Horses ), and my dad is a big Tracy Chapman fan but, believe me, I ain't - JF

Hi Jack, I just found out that you have a copy of Coming Up by Suede, just wondered what you reckoned to it to give it a 6. 12.06.04 - I haven't listened to it in years so the 6* is pretty arbitrary. I don't like Suede at all, particularly because of Anderson's voice. I've nothing against SFA but don't hold your breath for any reviews - JF

23.06.03 - I've got the John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton album but I'm not sure where to review it. At present I'm unlikely to concentrate on either Mayall's or Clapton's solo career. You should do some reviews for Tom Waits, Eric Clapton, U2, Violent Femmes, Phish, Grateful Dead, Bad Religion (punk), Peter Frampton, Queen, The Skatalites, Desmond Dekker, CSNY and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (sounds a lot like Tom Waits). Oh yeah, Sonic Youth too!
23.06.03 - I'm definitely going to review Tom Waits when I have enough albums, I don't know how much CSN(Y) I'll cover but probably some and the same applies to Eric Clapton's solo career. If I do reggae I'll probably start with Bob Marley and bands like Grateful Dead, Sonic Youth and Nick Cave are all on the "definitely maybe" list. No plans for any of the rest - Queen and U2 are two of my most disliked major bands ever - JF

Jethro Tull - Stand Up, Aqualung, and Thick as a Brick - the three albums represent possibly the bands strongest period of time...UFO I would review their live album Strangers in the Night; when reviewing it the remastered cd has the entire concert whereas the original release did not have the first two tracks which are poorly recorded and not indicative of what is to follow. If you choose to review it I would skip the first two tracks and review what the band originally intended to release... I enjoy your website and your reviews keep it up!

Jane's Addiction is an amazing band. Some may be turned off by Perry Farrel's voice, but they have produced some amazing music. Some are straight up rockers while others are 7-plus minute long "epics". I think you'd really enjoy them.
10.06.03 - I have an entirely open mind towards Jane's Addiction but, unfortunately, there are so many albums that I want to buy and I have such little money that I am mostly forced to prioritize. I'll bear your recommendation in mind, though.

15.09.03 - I hope to cover Van Morrison's early career some time in the near future. Talking Heads, Flaming Lips, XTC are all on the "list" but clearly I have some way to go before I can review their entire catalogue. I might review Urban Hymns as a Britrock album but I have no plans to buy any other Verve albums (one is quite enough). Creedence and My Bloody Valentine are possibilities and the rest are out of the picture for now.

29.05.03 - No plans for any of the first three. I'm a great admirer of both Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder so I hope to review them some stage in the future (with Stevie more likely to be first). I have not made up my mind regarding the proto-rock characters but I may well end up following George Starostin's lead and grouping them together on the same page. 24.05.03 - I really like the Kinks and I definitely want to review them but it is hard to cheaply acquire their albums. I'll keep on trying, though. The Beach Boys are easier to get hold of but the size of their catalogue means it might take a while. I'm certainly an admirer of the brilliance of Pet Sounds. Both bands are definitely on the "list", anyway. No plans to review the Monkees, I'm afraid.

Well-Brian Eno, the Deftones, Tool, Sonic Youth, Elvis Costello, Judas Priest, REM.
21.05.03 - No immediate plans to review any of them but I'm definitely interested in Eno and Elvis Costello and Tool and Sonic Youth to a lesser extent. I've got a few REM albums but I don't like them enough to buy the rest of their catalogue. I don't mind the Deftones but I'd be surprised if reviewed them any time soon. I can't imagine I'll concentrate on Judas Priest but I might review the excellent British Steel individually.
